Sara

In late November 1986, between concert tours, Nicks checked herself into the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California, to treat the cocaine addiction that she had been battling for a dozen years (four years beyond the eight she spent in denial). She had tried to break the habit in 1982 but lapsed during the making of the “Gypsy” music video. A doctor friend alerted her to the damage she had done to the inside of her nose (from cocaine as well as the mountain of aspirin she took for withdrawal headaches) and the risk, should she continue using, of a fatal hemorrhage. Friends and family, including her parents, convinced her to get help. She secured her stay at Betty Ford under the name Sara Anderson. It was a brief, monotonous experience of dorm-style living with a middle-aged female alcoholic, chores (mopping, vacuuming, cleaning the grounds), and nine-to-five counseling sessions. It was by no means the “boot camp” she claims. The food was fine, and fans buried her (and the staff) in flowers, plants, and love letters after her presence in the clinic was leaked. Nicks met Ford herself after being discharged and thanked her on bended knee for saving her.1 She lasted at the clinic for two and a half weeks in 1986, leaving earlier than expected—the prescribed stay is a month—but remained clean.
